You know what I can't remember once studying in class–about any book–during my undergrad English days? Plot.

Character, yes. Imagery, oh yes. Themes, moods, allusion? Check. But pacing? Uh uh. Plot? Nope.

As a writer, I feel rather comfortable claiming those are the hardest things to pull off. So why no love for 'em in lit classes?

A great list of the features Android really does have going for it

They're all things I'll miss when I switch to an iPhone sometime in the next couple of weeks — but for me, the bad things about Android (lack of quality third-party apps, battery life, attention to detail, aesthetics) just outweigh its good points.

Why I don't use an iPhone
People always want to know what phone I'm using — which is one big reason why I started gdgt — and I often get asked why I don't use an iPhone. The launch of the iPhone 4S this week presented me wit…

"When Mr Hayes says that 'very powerful interests will brand this as 'left' rather than 99%", he is right, if by 'very powerful interests' he means 'all the Americans who recognise that the 99%-er message is coming almost entirely from the left.'" #ows

Man, the Avengers trailer is bad

What happened to the Whedon who writes quippy, fun dialog? The guy who makes characters come alive with one-liners? There's not a single line spoken in the trailer that isn't cliche. Dull.

The Washington Post Outlook section today is all about comforting the left

Reshared post from +Arnold Kling

The Washington Post Outlook section today is all about comforting the left. The lead is an article saying that Obama's problem is his personality (he's a loner), which of course means that it's not his policies. The "5 myths" column is a claim that voter fraud is a myth, and that requiring voters to show ID is racist. Turn the page, and you get an analysis of the Herman Cain phenomenon by Willliam Jelani Cobb that assures you that the Republican Party is still racist. Turn the page once more, and you get an article by a sociologist equating the Tea Party with the Occupy movement, except that the Occupy movement is good. Turn a couple more pages, and you get a review of the new Steven Pinker book that argues that the decline of violence comes from the left, and that if red state America wins out we will revert to violence.

That this is what the Post's readership wants suggests to me that they are feeling pretty insecure.

"Some folks in the tech press viewed yesterday’s iPhone 4S announcement as a disappointment. But if that’s true, then it’s an awesome testament to just how far Steve had raised the bar. Poor Tim Cook got up there and demonstrated Suri, a new voice recognizing “personal assistant.” You ask it to remind you to buy milk when you arrived at the grocery store, and it WILL. You ask it for good burger joints in the neighborhood, and it will FIND THEM. You can now have a conversation with your phone, which used to be something that only Tony Stark could do."
